Dry & Dull Skin

Dry and dull skin is a very common skin problem resulting from lifestyle and environmental factors. It presents as a lack of skin radiance, causing skin to look unhealthy.

Dull skin may appear dry, patchy, ashy or lackluster and is often accompanied by an uneven skin texture

The D&D Science

One of the main functions of the epidermis (outermost layer of skin) is to prevent water loss and maintain hydration of the skin. Alterations in the barrier can result in increased water loss and dry skin.

Impaired barrier function will also facilitate the absorption of products being applied to the skin surface resulting in irritant contact dermatitis.

Dry skin on a macroscopic level can appear rough, flaky, uneven and even cracked or fissured.

Causes

Aging → in youth, skin typically appears firm, plump and even thanks to a steady supply of collagen and elastin – 2 key proteins responsible for maintaining skin’s structure. As we age, the production of these essential compounds slows and aging affects the skin’s natural production of lipids that help keep skin hydrated and soft. These factors, combined with the accumulated effects of chronic sun exposure and other environmental factors can result in dull, uneven-looking skin.

Dehydration → refers to skin that lacks water and can cause skin to appear lackluster, shallow or dull. Dehydrated skin may be more prone to sagging, wrinkling and roughness which can worsen the appearance of dullness

Pollution and sun exposure → exposure to UV radiation and pollution result in the formation of free radicals. These damaging molecules can alter our DNA, trigger pigmentary changes and affect the skin’s production of necessary compounds like collagen and elastin
